Elizabeth Sarita Shelton, a member of the Wilfrid Laurier University Sports Hall of Fame, passed away in Ottawa on June 27. She was 104 years old. As a child, Shelton lived in Corpus Christi, Texas and London, England, before moving to Toronto and later the Waterloo area. While in school, Shelton competed in track, badminton, swimming, tennis, basketball and volleyball. She was inducted into Laurier's Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. At the outset of the Second World War, Shelton followed in her family's military tradition and enlisted for service. Following the war, she served in the Department of National Defence.
Retired Wilfrid Laurier University Professor Nicolas Nyiri passed away in Wroxeter, Ontario, on June 1. He was 87 years old. Nyiri, a professor of political science at Laurier from the mid-1960s until the 1990s, continued to write up until the time of his death. His research interests included international relations, the United Nations, NORAD and aggression.
Longtime Wilfrid Laurier University Library employee Margaret Louise Wettlaufer passed away on July 26 at the age of 89. Wettlaufer was a graduate of Waterloo College and worked at the Laurier Library for 32 years. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waterloo, as well as an avid gardener who enjoyed cooking, sewing and travelling.
Hildegard Lindschinger, an employee of the Wilfrid Laurier University Library for 31 years, passed away on Sept. 24. She was 64 year old. Remembered for her interest in art, music, dancing and poetry, Lindschinger was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Waterloo.
