Victor Martens (BA '64)

Victor MartensVictor Martens, professor emeritus in the Faculty of Music, passed away on Nov. 25, 2018. He was 87 years old.

Martens was an award-winning professor at Laurier for 37 years and a powerful influence in both music education and performance around the world. He is credited with starting Laurier’s voice program, growing the reputation of the Faculty of Music and coaching hundreds of students, many of whom have gone on to sing on the most important stages in the world.

Before beginning his career at Laurier in 1969, Martens performed with symphony orchestras in Germany, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver and Kitchener-Waterloo. His performances have been broadcast on radio in Europe, as well as across Canada on CBC Radio.

Martens won many awards for his contributions at Laurier, including the Outstanding Alumni Award in 1986, the Teacher of the Year Award in 1987 and the Hoffman-Little Award for Excellence in Teaching and Professional Endeavours in 2011.

Cheryl Sage (BA '09)

Cheryl SageLongtime Laurier employee Cheryl Sage passed away on Nov. 3, 2018. She was 56 years old.

Sage began working at Laurier in 1992, serving as a floater before taking on roles in housing, special needs, the bookstore and printing services. While working full-time, she studied during the evenings and earned her undergraduate degree in Communications Studies in 2009.

Sage was also an active member of the community, volunteering for more than 20 years with Community Support Connections, the Lions Club and Neighbourhood Watch.

Reginald Haney (BA '51, MA '71)

Reginald HaneyFormer Laurier MBA program director Reginald Haney passed away on Nov. 6, 2018.

Haney graduated from Laurier, known as Waterloo College at the time, with a BA in History in 1951 and went on to graduate from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1955.

As a full-time practicing lawyer with expertise in administrative law and education law, Haney offered general counsel services to Laurier. He went on to complete an master's degree at Laurier in 1971 and taught business at the university for 35 years, both part-time and full-time, while continuing his legal practice.

Haney served as director of the MBA program during his time at Laurier and was granted professor emeritus status in 1995. He was named one of the university’s 100 Alumni of Achievement as part of the university’s centenary in 2011.
