Gary Barwin shares literary talents with Laurier community

Gary Barwin, an award-winning author of 21 books of fiction and poetry, was chosen as Laurier's Edna Staebler Writer in Residence for the winter term.

Barwin's bestselling 2016 novel, Yiddish for Pirates, was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Award for Fiction. Yiddish for Pirates won the Stephen Leacock Medal and the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for Fiction.

During his time on Laurier's campuses from Jan. 14 to March 22, Barwin visited classes, conducted writing workshops and held one-on-one meetings with writers in the Laurier community. He also worked on his novel-in-progress, Nothing the Same, Everything Haunted.

The Edna Staebler Laurier Writer in Residence position was established in 2012 through a bequest from the late Edna Staebler, prolific creative non-fiction writer and author of the popular Schmecks books that celebrate the culture of Waterloo Region.
