Message from the WLUAA President: A culture of service

As Laurier alumni, we learned to value community service during our student days and keep contributing long after graduation. Our university community is strengthened by so many individuals who give their time and resources to the greater good.

I am honoured to have participated in the Laurier tradition of service by serving as your alumni association president for the past four years. The highlight of this experience for me was witnessing the service of others in the Laurier community. This role has allowed me a front-row seat to student life and alumni engagement and I have developed an even greater appreciation for the efforts of our community.

Through witnessing small acts of kindness as I traverse campus, learning about exemplary members of our alumni community through the Awards of Excellence program and meeting so many alumni leading lives of leadership and purpose, I see many reasons to be proud.

I have also witnessed my fellow board members demonstrating exceptional volunteerism and commitment to improving Laurier. Many bring long resumes of community engagement. Their care, knowledge and experience – as well as their willingness to give back – are so very Laurier. Like many of you, alumni association board members care deeply about the university and want to see Laurier succeed.

Part of that commitment to success involves an important responsibility as a board: stewarding the alumni association’s philanthropic commitments to Laurier. During the past term, we aligned our financial resources toward key areas of the university: mental health, social entrepreneurship and renewable scholarships. This is a time of uncertainty when it comes to post-secondary funding in Ontario and I am proud of the board for committing to support these important areas of student life.

During my term, I have seen that the alumni association has a strong voice at Laurier. We are consulted on key issues facing the university and we are respected members of the Laurier community. I leave this role feeling even more proud to be a Laurier Golden Hawk and wish my board colleagues all the best during the next term. I expect great things!

Stay golden,
