Ann Brandt was appointed assistant vice-president: development. Brandt possesses more than 20 years of experience in development and external relations within the post-secondary sector, including her time as director: development at Laurier’s Brantford campus from 2015 to 2017.
Associate Professor Lamine Diallo was presented Laurier’s Faculty Award for Service Excellence and Community Engagement. The award recognizes full-time faculty and librarians who, in addition to their teaching and scholarship, are leaders in service to the community and/or university.
Professor Emeritus Barry Gough, professor of history at Laurier from 1972 to 2004, has been awarded the title and degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa (LLD) by the University of Victoria in recognition of devotion in the service of others and contribution to the advancement of knowledge.
Gus Hill was appointed the Lyle S. Hallman Chair in Child and Family Welfare for a five-year term. Hill is an associate professor in Laurier’s Indigenous Field of Study program within the Faculty of Social Work and recently completed a four-year term as the program’s associate dean.
Kathy Hogarth was appointed dean of the Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work. Hogarth, who previously served as an associate professor in the School of Social Work at Renison University College at the University of Waterloo, possesses a diverse range of postsecondary teaching experience.
Janny Leung has been appointed Laurier’s new dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2022. Leung currently serves as head of the School of English at the University of Hong Kong.
The Board of Governors of Wilfrid Laurier University appointed Deborah MacLatchy to a second five-year term as president and vice-chancellor of the university. MacLatchy's current term began July 1, 2017 and runs until June 30, 2022; her second term will run from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2027.
Bruce McKay was appointed dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences. McKay has held several high-profile administrative positions since joining Laurier in 2008. He was also recently appointed to serve as the institutional lead for Laurier’s partnership with Navitas to establish Wilfrid Laurier International College at the Brantford campus.
Laurier has appointed Jonathan Newman to lead strategic institutional innovation and entrepreneurship activities. Newman, who also serves as the university's vice-president: research, will support Laurier’s focus on building thriving communities and developing future-readiness.
Manuel Riemer, professor of Psychology, has been honoured by Sustainable Waterloo Region as the organization’s 2020 Champion of the Year. The award recognizes Riemer’s partnership in initiatives including the ClimateActionWR program, which facilitates cross-sector efforts to reduce greenhouse gases in Waterloo Region, and his sustainability research at Laurier.
Associate Professor Karin Schnarr, director of Laurier's BBA Program, was appointed chair of Ontario’s Task Force on Women and the Economy. The task force seeks to address the unique and disproportionate economic barriers women face, particularly in an economy impacted by the COVID‐19 pandemic.
Jillian Swartz has been awarded Laurier’s Distinguished Governor Award in recognition of her service to the university. Since joining Laurier’s Board of Governors in 2012, Swartz has served as both a community at large member and lieutenant-governor-in-council member and filled several leadership roles, including board chair, vice-chair and treasurer.
Laurier has appointed Dirk Wallschläger as the inaugural Laurier Distinguished Research Chair in Aquatic Sciences. Wallschläger is an environmental chemist who comes to Laurier from Trent University, where he served as a faculty member since 2002 and received three merit awards for research.

Laurier celebrated employees marking 40 years working at the university as part of the annual Employee Achievement Awards. Because an awards event was not held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employees celebrating 40-year work anniversaries in 2020 and 2021 were honoured.
